17' Herreshoff design Wooden Rowboat
1989
$3500
- This boat was built to follow an 17'
Herreshoff design. The builders were Gerald and Susan Field of
Classic
Boats, in the town of Rosseau, Ontario, Canada.
- This is a double-ended rowing boat, that
can accomodate two people ('double') rowing. It has outboard oarlocks
and three seats. It is made of mahogany marine plywood, with solid
gunwhales, and laminated frame ribs.
- It was built in about 1989.
- Faithful to the period of the original design, its seats
have cane
inserts. It has brass horn-type oarlocks and outboard bronze oarsockets.
- It
is 17.5 feet (5.3m) feet long and has a 46 in. (1.21m) beam. It weighs
about 160 lbs (72.6 kilograms). Amidships, depth is about 14 inches
(.36m).
- It has been used 5 or 6 times in its life, and otherwise
dry-stored by
original owner.
- The seats have hand-caned infills. (The optional
Loudon seat cushions would be comfortable here.)
- Oars and brass oarlocks are included.
BERTRAM RUNABOUT
20'
A Classic in the style of
'Moppie'
Made in 1966; Restoration in 2000
$29,500 (was
$32,000)
I consider this to be the most
seaworthy
boat of its size ever built.
It is a
Raymond Hunt design, no longer made. Production ended in
1971.
This
boat has been restored to better-than-new
condition.
The current Mercruiser engine is a 265 hp V8, with 480 hours on
it.
My general remarks on this
design:
- This was a very influential design. Many subsequent
designs
tried to copy it, but usually with much lighter (and
cheaper) construction.
- Hull shape is a deep V with lifting strakes. It is 20'
(6.1m)LOA, with an 8' (2.44m) beam.
- It is very heavily built, with some models weighing 3000
lbs (1430 kg).
- It is very smooth riding and dry, and very
gentle coming
to a plane.
- It is foam-filled for positive floatation. It has
side lockers for storage
- In has three seats forward;
there are jump
seats in the stern.
